In the Roman age, at the Bujanovac spa site there was a hot water spring and medicinal mud, and right next to the spring there is a village called Kraljeva kuca (King’s house). It was named after king Milutin’s holiday house, who used the benefits of this spring. During the Ottoman rule the spa was known as Karaman spa, and since buffalos used to roll in the mud, it was also called Buffalo spa. A kind of mud lake, originated from the spring of thermal mineral water in the middle of the plain outside Bujanovac, was used as a wild spa.

In recent times, especially during the summer months, people from all over the country used to come looking for medicine for gout and skin diseases. “A Large Swamp” smelling of sulfur and mud at the same time, was at the time unsightly and marvelous. The young and the old, the sick and the healthy, sometimes even cattle with the remains of dry mud on their bodies, used to enjoy the benefits of the hot mineral water. During the 60s, formal medicine considered spa treatment as pseudo-medicine.  With careful examinations in 1970s the extraordinary characteristics of the water and high mineralized mud were confirmed and after that a big, modern spa was built. Around the spa a big village outside Bujanovac sprang up. The water was used more efficiently and with more quality since 1975, when two indoor pools belonging to the Health center in Bujanovac were built. In 1984 in Rakovac wasteland, a modern Institute for Prevention, Therapy and Rehabilitation of Disability – “Vrelo” was built. Key analyses were carried out in eminent institutions in Czechoslovakia and Institute in Karlovy Vary,”Slovakoterme” Institute in Bratislava – Pjestani spa, and French spa “Vichy”. The certificates from medical centers in London and Frankfurt testify to this matchless natural medical center. Nowadays, the quality of water is regularly tested by “BATUT” Institute in Belgrade.

The advantages of Bujanovac spa healing water over other spas located in the upper flow of Juzna Morava are: easy accessibility, high temperature of the mineral water, its strong thermal and mechanic effects on the body and significant profusion of the spring. Until summer of 1966, Bujanovac spa had one elliptic pool dug out in the ground with longer axis of about 10 m, shorter about 5 m and 60 cm depth. Thermal mineral water in the pool breaks out from the catchment pipe of multiple springs, where it boils. The pouring of the water is followed by gas bubbles. The capacity of the spring is significant, which was confirmed by the 5 m high eruption of the water pillar, occurred during drilling in 1966. The water inflow is larger than the outflow, so the surrounding area is often flooded. Inside, peloid is made (humus mud), after which this spa is also called Bujanovac (Rakovac) mud. The temperature of the thermal water is 42o C. The water is colorless, somewhat sour and sulfurous.
